Artisanal miners in Brazil are facing eviction and relocation as Canadian mining company Belo Sun looks to establish the largest open-pit gold mine in Latin America. For decades, these artisanal miners have sustained their community. But the Belo Sun project threatens not only their livelihood, but is changing the landscape around them. The project calls for the construction of a tailings dam and dump for depleted ore. The project will also use cyanide in the extraction process.
